We had so much fun making these cute butterfly wings! This is a great costume you can make with your child.

What you need:
Cereal box
Tissue paper
Hole punch
Elastic
Glue
Scissors
Pencil
Ruler

To make the wings, we used a large cereal box. Open up the box and lay it flat. The narrow rectangle in the centre panel will become the hinge between the wings. Measure 11cms from the top of this panel and mark both sides. Draw a line across the centre panel. From that line that you have just drawn, measure 5cm to mark the bottom of the hinge.

On one side of the box, draw the one of the wings, making sure that the wing meets the centre panel marking you have just made.

Cut out the wing but make sure that it stays connected to the centre piece.

Fold the centre panel in half and then flip the wing over. Your first wing will now be the template for the second wing.

Trace the shape of the wing.

Lift the wing back in place and cut around the other wing you have just drawn. Again, make sure that the wing remains connected to the centre panel.

I used three colours of tissue paper and cut out roughly about 3x 4cm rectangles.

Add glue at the bottom of the cardboard wing and stick the tissue paper rectangles starting from the bottom working all the way up to the top of the wings.

Cover both sides of the wings with the tissue paper.

Using a hole punch, punch four holes parallel to each other on the centre panel.

Measure the elastic so that it fits around the arms of your child. Thread the measured elastic through the bottom hole in the centre panel and across to the parallel hole at the bottom. Next, thread the elastic up to the top hole and across to the other hole.

Tie the ends together and pull out the elastic to make the armhole loops.

The wings are now ready to be worn for playing. I have a very happy butterfly fluttering around the house!
