Hi guys, Alana here from Threadbare Cloak with my second post for the year. This month I’m showing you how to make a Raw Chocolate Walnut Slice. Not only does it taste good, it’s actually healthy, too – thanks to it being raw, refined sugar-free and dairy-free.

The words healthy and tasty don’t usually go together but with this slice they really do. I’m not just saying this either; I have the endorsement of the “man test”, which is notoriously hard to pass in my house. The fact that I even got the photos for this recipe is amazing since said man was hovering in the background waiting for the opportune moment to steal another piece! I really should be grateful, though, because there has been many a recipe that has not received this kind of treatment and consequently ended up at the bottom of the compost bucket.

Making this slice is super easy. All it really requires is throwing the ingredients together, pressing it into a dish and freezing.

If you want to give this slice a go, here are the details:


  • 1 1/2 cups soaked dates
  • 1/3 cup cacao or cocoa
  • 1/3 cup shredded coconut
  • 1 tsp vanilla paste or extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup walnut pieces
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate (chopped)
  • 1/3 cup rolled oats


The first step is to soak the dates in hot water for at least 30 minutes. This softens them up, making it easier to puree them. Trust me, trying to puree dry dates is a battle you won’t win!

Once they are nice and soft, pop them in the food processor with a splash of the soaking water and blitz until a smooth puree. You will need to scrape down the sides and add more water a few times. Just keep going until there are no lumps left.

Next add the cocoa, vanilla, coconut and salt. Blitz until combined.

Lastly, add the the walnuts, chocolate, and oats. Pulse until completely combined. Don’t over-process as you want the walnuts and chocolate to stay as chunks.

Line a tray with baking paper. Press the ingredients into the tray, making sure to smooth the top. Sprinkle with a little coconut and pop in the freezer to set.

Leave in the freezer for a few hours or even overnight. Once solid, cut into slices, place in a container and store in the fridge. Or keep them in the freezer like I do, they taste amazing frozen!
